Sleep Apnea Snoring

Causes of snoring

Over the years, fascinating research has determined exactly the causes of snoring. Causes of snoring is the topic of discussion of this section of Sleep Apnea and Snoring information website.

The causes of snoring

During sleep, the muscles supporting the opening of the upper airway in the back of the throat relax. Extra tissue in the palate and uvula vibrates with each breath, and these vibrations are the causes of snoring sounds. The uvula is the fleshy piece between the tonsils. In some snorers, the airway has a tendency to close at any point. Narrowing of the airway causes turbulence and is responsible for causes of snoring.

During sleep, snorers experience a limitation of airflow along with turbulence at the entrance to the respiratory system. This narrowing and vibrating is caused by factors such as:

  • fat deposits around the upper airway or
  • neurological problems such as:
    • a lack of coordination between the muscles that keep open the upper airway and the main breathing muscles such as the diaphragm. This happens when the upper airway muscles relax yet the diaphragm continues to work.
