Fat
Fat is calorie dense and provides 9 calories per gram. Thus,
limiting foods full of fat limits your calorie intake and
eventually leads to weight loss. This compares to meat and
protein which provide about 4 calories per gram. The idea of
weight loss is to eat just enough calories that your body can
burn off. Eating more calories than your body can burn off
leads to weight gain. To figure out how much fat there is in
any kind of food, the first thing to do is read the label on
the food product.
While all types of fat can pose threats to your health one
way or another, the worst kind of fat to stay away from are
saturated fat and trans fatty acids. Nowadays, many snacks and
foods advertise '0% trans fat' because nowadays more and more
people are watching the fat content of their food.
Saturated fat
Saturated fat is a the type of fat often found in
greatest amounts in animal products such as skin, whole
milk dairy products, lard, eggs, meats, and in some vegetable
oils, including coconut, palm kernel, and palm oils. Saturated
fat raises blood cholesterol and is very bad for one's health,
not to mention bad for people trying to lose weight.
Trans fatty acids
Trans fatty acids are types of fat that are converted from
their natural form into an artificial form in foods such as
margarine, French fries, biscuits and cakes where edible oils
have been industrially hardened to ensure they stay solid at
room temperature. Trans fatty acids are found in many
processed foods that contain partially hydrogenated fats.
