Food pyramid

Beans and peas as protein substitutes for meats in USDA food pyramid

Beans and peas are high in protein and low in fat. However, peas and beans are high in complex carbohydrates. They make great meat substitute since they have lower fat content than most meats.

Using the USDA food pyramid guide

As you can see on the new USDA food pyramid diagram, there are serving suggestions on the food pyramid next to the food groups.

  • Choose more servings from the plant groups such as bread, cereal, rice, pasta, fruit and vegetable.
  • Choose fewer servings from animal groups such as milk and meat.
  • Choose fats and sweets sparingly especially when embarking on a weight loss journey.
Weight loss programs

There aren't weight loss programs that work for everyone. Some weight loss programs work for some people and not for others. Different people also have different eating styles and habits. Some people like the strict diet programs to follow while others prefer to have more freedom in choosing what they eat. Below are two common weight loss programs. Wight loss dieting, if taken too far, can also lead to major health hazard.

Low fat weight loss programs

Some low fat weight loss programs are recommended for some people with health conditions. For example, sometimes low fat diets are recommended for people with heart problems or cancer problems. However, for weight loss programs using low fat diets, you need to cut down fat intake to about 10% of calories or less. This means virtually no animal protein in your diet.

Vegetarian diet

A vegetarian diet features high fiber and low fat meals usually consisting of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and seeds. Some vegetables and herbs also have medicinal properties and can sometimes help with weight loss.
